Welcome to the Saskatchewan Paint Horse Club “New Year”. I am happy to be back on the SPHC board of directors and to have the opportunity of sharing news with SPHC members. Tammie Cooper, the Vice President of the SPHC will be sharing the newsletter duties with me. If you have news, please contact one of us (our contact information is on the SPHC website at www.saskpainthorseclub.com).
As I have been away from the newsletter for a year, this is absolutely the easiest newsletter I have written. I will get to all the good news shortly, but am going to take the liberty of sharing some of my reasons for taking a break. For anyone that has not been involved with the SPHC board and/or volunteered at our shows, I urge you to take a few minutes to think about all the work that goes into the club and the shows (before, during and after). Most of the SPHC directors are not only working hard to make the show an enjoyable experience for the exhibitors, but they are busy trying to get their own horse(s) ready and to show themselves. For myself, it got to be too much and the volunteer duties were taking away from my enjoyment at the shows. Good news though, there is a great bunch of people on the SPHC board and in 2009 there were more volunteers willing to help out at the shows then ever before. I am personally asking each and every one of you to consider lending a helping hand at the next SPHC show. Just a few minutes of your time may allow a member of the SPHC board the opportunity to show his/her horse and to enjoy the benefits of their hard work, just like all the other exhibitors.
NOW – GREAT NEWS FOR 2010. This year is going to be an exciting one. The SPHC 2010 show season will start off with the Lloydminster Spring Show, May 22 and 23. The roster has been set and includes a full slate of performance classes, including the walk/trot division, a Yearling Halter Jackpot; a 2 year old Longe Line Under Saddle Jackpot; Youth and Adult Nervous Novice Western Pleasure classes and the popular Timed Trail Jackpot.
Our SPHC Youth will once again have the benefit of Tammie Cooper’s enthusiasm and planning to make their show experience the best possible. I need to remind all of our youth to get the parent/guardian/trainer practicing for the Parent/Guardian/Trainer showmanship class, where the first and second place youth will be the judge.

More information as well as forms on the Lloydminster show are available on the website, or contact any director.
A focus in 2010 for the SPHC Board of Directors is to attract more exhibitors to the shows. If you have ideas for what might bring more people out, please let a director know. It not only takes effort to put on an APHA approved show, it takes money. A rough estimate of the cost of putting on a single show is $20,000.00. The Board would like to offer added money in its futurities again in 2010, however, the amount of added money will depend on the amount of sponsorship obtained. If you, or someone you know, are willing to donate cash or merchandise for the benefit of the SPHC and its exhibitors, please contact any director. No item or donation is too small and all are greatly appreciated.
One of the exciting initiatives for 2010 will be a $1000 draw at our Harvest of Colours show in Saskatoon on September 25/26. Each horse you bring to the show (must book a stall, be a SPHC member and have paid an office fee) will give you a chance to with the $1000 prize, so look around your place, and bring a couple of extra horses. Odds are pretty good you may come home with an extra $1000!!
I want to end the first newsletter of 2010 acknowledging the successes of our members in 2009.
